Linux was programmed by Linus Torvalds modeled on UNIX.
Linux is an UNIX like operating system, which is freely available.
Therefore, it is a competitor of Microsoft Windows.
Linux and many programs running on Linux, are Open Source. This
means, they are released under the GNU Public License (GPL), which ensures
that free software will stay free. For example, the sources of the programs
are available and can be changed by anyone.
Linux can be installed on all usual PCs. Only very new or exotic
hardware may cause trouble finding a driver.
